yeah ken, I was looking for current(), but am sort of worn out trying to make open office tables space correctly so I totally missed it.

The portion "parent::*" returns the parent of the current node in the first expression and the parent of <value> in the second expression. Similarly the "local-name()" returns different values in both expressions.
Did you perhaps want for the second one the following?
select="$moduleDoc//value[@name=concat(local-name(current()/parent::*),local-name(current()))]
