There are two standards.(well one standard and one drfat) saxon 8 implements the draft of xslt2 which is a different language to XSLT1. saxon 6 and xalan implement xslt1. If you put version="1.0" then xslt2 processors enter a backward compatibility mode that means they emulate more features of XSLT1.
