Padding is available in exlt which rather not supported in xslt1.0. exslt implementations include pure xslt1 template implementations as well as the se of extension functions. Also That google list included other answers as well as xslt. All teh answers are only relevant to XSLT1 as it's a built in function in Xpath 2.
