XSLT 2.0 allows you to create your own functions within the stylesheet using <xsl:function>. In XSLT 1.0 you can use named templates (which aren't as flexible). Many processors also allow you to call user-defined functions written in a language such as Java, (called "extension functions") but the rules are processor-specific.
