Chris, what you did is understandable as I have also done it and I think that looking back many others have also done it. If you see a message "From" aperson@xxxxxxxxxxxxx, and the xsl-list is "CC"'d on the message, you would think that hitting "Reply" would get you a message to aperson@xxxxxxxxxxxxx In fact, the default reply address is the XSL list.
